Asbestos Inventory

Asbestos is a cancer and lung disease hazard. Once considered the miracle mineral, asbestos was commonly added to building products due to its high tensile strength and resistance to heat and corrosion. Asbestos can be found in a large variety of building materials including: drywall (joint mud), attic insulation, roofing material, wall insulation (cinderblock), linoleum flooring, textured ceilings/walls and ceiling tiles. When asbestos containing building materials are disturbed due to renovations or unforeseen events, the asbestos fibers within the building materials can become airborne, leaving the carcinogenic dust free-floating, where it can become inhaled by a renovation crew and/or any other building occupants.

The ABI Hazmat Corporation has over 20 years of direct experience dealing with asbestos issues in homes, schools, hospitals, commercial and industrial buildings. We work directly with concerned homeowners, buyers and sellers to conduct asbestos surveys and determine any issues for future renovations or demolition.

The ABI Hazmat Corporation has extensive experience working with general contractors and high profile clients to manage asbestos issues for hospital projects, school seismic upgrades and large hotel renovations.

You do NOT want to be issued a STOP WORK ORDER from WorkSafeBC due to not meeting regulations and standards. We manage asbestos projects and collect suspect asbestos and lead paint samples and provide a simple written report for a nominal cost, to prevent the Stop Work Order from occurring.

ABI’s Laboratory provides:

  • NIOSH 7400 Method ‘Asbestos and other Fibers in Air’ testing by Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM).
  • Same-day or next AM analysis and reporting of results.

Our Lab Analyst has a NIOSH 582/7400 Certificate of Completion for: Asbestos and other fibers in-air monitoring/ microscope analysis and has completed the AHERA training for a certified Asbestos Building Inspector.

mold testing

Mold Testing Services

Mould is fungi that can grow in homes and buildings negatively impacting air quality and health. Mould spores and fragments may become airborne, and once inhaled, can cause asthma-related symptoms and inflammation. Some spores of toxic species can penetrate deep into the lungs causing allergic reactions.

Mold grows under a combination of environmental circumstances including moisture on surfaces due to excess humidity, lack of ventilation, and adequate temperature. If mold is a concern for you, we can provide a thorough assessment of your building, test the air quality of your enclosed space, and supply you with test results and an action plan to manage this health hazard.

We provide:

Mould assessments prior to air testing
Grow-operation re-occupancy testing and reports
Mold in-air testing, swab testing and written reports of laboratory results
Project abatement management services

Indoor Air Quality Testing

Indoor air contaminants are pollutants present in the air you breathe and put you and your family’s health at risk. Employers also have the responsibility to ensure the air quality is healthy in the workplace to ensure employee health. A short list of possible contaminants is mould and fungi, bacteria, dust mites, pollen and spores (aeroallergens), chemical pollutants such as gases and vapor, lead, asbestos and ozone.

ABI Hazmat Corporation can address indoor air quality concerns including assessments and risk mitigation action plans to keep you and your family or employees safe and healthy.

lead detection

Lead Detection And Abatement Risk Assessments

Lead is a highly toxic metal and was used in the past in many products such as exterior paints and pipes for plumbing and venting. Prior to 1980, lead-based paints were used because lead, as an additive, made the paint pliable and weather resistant. Lead-based paint can be a serious health problem, especially for young children who may chew on any fallen flaking paint chips off of old building materials or inhale airborne lead dust during renovation activities.

Lead poisoning can cause damage to a developing brain, nervous system, circulatory system and kidneys and can stay in your body for over 25 years following exposure.

Lead in Your Plumbing

Older homes and public buildings (such as schools) may have lead plumbing systems or lead solder in water pipes. We can send out the sample for analysis of total lead content and report back to you with lab results. Drinking water quality has become an increased public concern.
